Cynthia Lummis, an American senator and fan of digital currencies, bought some bitcoins about a month ago, when bitcoin was trading at less than $ 45,000.
to the Report Quinn Telegraph Cynthia Lumis, a Republican representative in the US Senate from Wyoming, announced that on August 16 (August 25) she bought between $ 50,000 and $ 100,000 in Bitcoin.
The disclosure is part of the “Disclosure of Commercial Information to Members of Congress” Act, which prohibits members of Congress and government employees from keeping their personal income information private. The law, known as the STOCK Act, was passed in April 2012 by former US President Barack Obama. The purpose of passing this law was to combat the clandestine trade of members of Congress and government employees.
According to CNBC, the purchase of Lumis was announced outside the 45-day opportunity to disclose business information. It is said that the reason for this delay was an error that occurred during the filing of the case.
The purchase comes two weeks after Lumis and several other senators sought to add an amendment to the Biden government’s infrastructure investment bill that included clauses to support the digital currency industry. The bipartisan amendment was also endorsed by US Senators Mark Warner and Kyrsten Sinema. The amendment was intended to exempt miners and providers of digital currency wallets from filing tax returns.
The Lumis amendment did not controversially get into the Infrastructure Investment Bill, and the bill passed unchanged in the Senate on August 10th. Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, a Pennsylvania senator, said the bill was flawed and that some digital currency companies would not be able to file tax returns as described in the bill.
The infrastructure investment bill has not yet been put to a vote in the House of Representatives, and it seems that the reason for this delay is the consideration of overdue measures by Congress.
Lumis’ purchase is not surprising given his tenacious stance in support of digital currencies. Before the price of Bitcoin fell below $ 30,000, he had said he would like to buy Bitcoin, although it is not yet clear whether Lumis owned Bitcoin at the time.
He told Fox News in June:
I’m really excited about this and as soon as [قیمت] Come a little lower, again a little [بیت کوین] I will buy.
