The German-Austrian energy company Switch accepts bitcoins to pay for electricity bills.
“This move is a big step for Austrian energy subscribers,” Switch said in a press conference and Facebook post. Our goal in introducing Bitcoin cryptocurrency as a payment method in Austria is to serve digitally aware customers. “It is now possible to bill in Bitcoin for those who want to use it in their payments.”
Austria is becoming a big fan of cryptocurrencies at the consumer level. Yipbee, a retail company, said last month that orders paid for with Bitcoin accounted for 10 percent of the company’s total sales.
Earlier in February, a Bitcoin-based company in Vienna offered virtual currency education as well as Bitcoin ATMs.
Such developments pushed Austria ahead of its neighbor, Germany, which is usually slow to adopt cryptographic innovations.
Beyond the borders, however, bitcoin exchanges are much more professional in Switzerland. Bitcoin has the highest exchange rate in the main Swiss exchange, SIX.
